Ford brought back the Boss 302 name in 2012 and it wasn’t just an appearance package! The original Boss 302 set the bar quite high for it’s modern successors, but I think these new versions do it justice. This 302 offers up 444 horsepower and 380 pounds of torque, that’s some serious power for a street going Mustang.
Sometimes a new car is worthy of an old name. Which brings us to Ford, which trades on heritage, and specifically Mustang heritage, better than any automaker with the possible exception of Porsche, with the 911. And that got us thinking about the Boss 302. Two versions were made, the original from 1969-'70, and a follow up in 2012-'13.
Ford's Muscle Parts showed how to improve a stock 302 to 355 hp. If a standard 302 could be built out to 355 hp just by using 351W heads, a 302 with what amounts to giant-valve 351C 4V heads has to be close to 390. Of course, this is all gross, and nobody uses that anymore. Amateur restorer.

The Boss 302 (Hi-Po) engine was created in 1968 with the sole purpose of winning the coveted SCCA’s 1969 Trans-Am Championship. Ford engineers threw everything they could into development of what became the Boss 302 V8. Ford Motor Company had two uniquely different small block V8s during the first generation of the Mustang.
According to our 1969-‘70 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Buyer’s Guide, today the scarcest Boss 302s are those built for the 1969 model year with just 1,934 produced. The numbers more than tripled for 1970, increasing the production count to 6,318. This restored example from 1969, listed for sale on Hemmings Auctions, is one of the rare ones.
